Posted by: sporty in Articles on August 27th, 2009

As summer keeps nearing, parents think what to do with the kids? Should they hang out with their old friends or make new friends on going to a camp. Camp builds the skills necessary to prepare for adulthood. Parents, campers and camp staff reported growth in areas such as self-confidence, independence and making friends. It helped campers a lot because they were able to make new friends, knew good things about themselves, did certain things which they were frightened to do first. Parents are happy to send them to camp because it helped their child to build self confidence, they do keep in touch with their friends even after the camp. For years, camper’s parents have reported that when their children return home they are more caring, understand the importance of giving, and are more responsible and trustworthy. While attending a camp the camper is able to improve on his physical characteristics like trained supervision, balanced meals, camping increases mental and physical vigor. Children improve on their social skills. They learn about different races, economic levels, religions, gender and level of capabilities. Children are at less risk at camp where they have a sense of community, develop intergenerational relationships, and learn through first-hand experiences. Camp professionals teach simple things to children that can touch human spirit. Camping helps children to speak more freely of their feelings and concerns that they would otherwise not feel comfortable talking about. It also helps children come close to nature, so that they will start growing more trees. Other outings include hiking and fishing too. In hiking you can learn about woods, animals and many other things. Safety is the most important thing in camping. Many organizations teach children how to be safe while camping, hiking, and fishing and other outdoor activities.  You should keep certain important things with you while camping like first aid kit. Other important things like insect repellant, bug spray, pain relievers, sunscreen, band aids etc. These are some of the basic things that are needed. Campers learn lot of things in a camp. Some of them include discover their interests, values and talents, test skills in problem solving, create life long friendships, take responsibility for others and help out, learn to adjust in new environments, various social situation, develop personal habits that lead to a healthy lifestyle etc. camp activities and group living in a natural environment are the tools used to create camp communities that provide for successful, healthy development and a place where having fun is a daily criterion.

Posted by: sporty in General on August 25th, 2009

For kids, water sports are adventurous and fun filled. But safety has to be given first priority. All kids should compulsorily wear life jackets, even if kids know how to swim. All boats and rafts should also carry extra life jackets, whistle and lifebuoys. Water sports need to be accompanies by an adult who must know how to swim, preferable accompanied by an attentive lifeguard. He should also know what to do during times of emergency and A B Cs of giving first aid. Water sports should always be carried out, when the climate is pleasant. If the climate is sunny, do apply sun screen cream to protect yourself from radiations.

There are different kinds of water sports for children, some are for pleasure and some are very adventurous and exciting. Let’s start with a simple water sport like boating, which is very much enjoyable. In most of the kids and youths camps you’ll find boating and canoeing. Don’t forget to carry your life jackets while you get into the boat. Always you need to follow what your instructor or guide says. Sailing is adventurous when the wind is good. Once you have enough practice, you can begin to participate in your local sailing competitions! If you want an adventurous water sport, then sailing has to be your first choice! Most nature loving kids will choose scuba diving, where kids will be able to learn more about the fascinating world of animals and it also helps them to develop empathy towards animals. If you want to swim with fishes, explore the corals and admire the color of blue, then scuba diving is the best. Scuba diving is also an excellent exercise.

Surfing is an excellent exercise and a superb family sport. Surfing is also a great outdoor sport during a sunny day or during summers. Swimming is the most favorite sport for many children and as well as for adults, it doesn’t matter if you swim in a lake, ocean, river, pool or with any competitive swimmers or friends; swimming is always enjoyable. But make sure the water is clean. If you are a beginner or a learner, then stay away from the depth. Wear goggles, ear plugs and a swim cap while swimming and you need to avoid swimming after heavy food. Apart from these water sports, you can even play water basketball and volleyball which is even more fun and exciting.

Whether your kid is attending a one-week or an eight-week camp, packing can seem like a intimidating task .Here are few things to consider before you start for a camp, the luggage to use and extra items that you may forget.1. Things to inquire before you start packing for a camp•    Would I get a camp clothing list? This might be your best source of information for what the camp may require and doesn’t. On the list, you can find a number of recommended clothing items and other things to bring for particular events, like overnight campouts or themed activities. If you have not received a clothing list, you can call the camp or visit their site and see if the list is available.•    What they should not bring? Each camp is different and has their own rules for what every camper is allowed. So enquire about it.•    Do they want uniforms? Several camps try to lessen “competitive dressing” among campers by having uniforms. Some camps require all clothing to include their camp logo; some may require a particular shirt and short color. Be sure to clear up any questions regarding your child’s necessary clothing before your child leaves for the camp.•    What stuff does the camp offer? Some camps will provide sheets, mattress, and additional blankets and some even supply towels. Review your clothing catalog for more information about things the camp provides. 2. Selecting your type of luggage: Now you have the items that are needed to pack, what type of luggage you should use? Here is the list of the most common luggage types and pros and cons of each.•    A Duffel bag: It is large and sturdy but it can get damaged if shipped.•    Trunk: Good for camps with longer stays and is also sturdy and does not damage easily if shipped though it is bulky.•    Suitcase: It is best for short camp stays; simple to organize clothing, as most of it have many compartments; easier for a child to carry alone as most have wheels and handles. Things that you should not forget:•    Adjoin a nametag to each piece of luggage.•    Write down lock combination or have extra keys for key locks. Place them in a safe place for your child or you could give copies to your child’s counselor or camp director (some may require it).•    Find out whether you could ship luggage directly from your residence to camp. Now many camps have assigned trucking companies to consider shipping your luggage through another shipping company.Extras that you may forget•    Medications: Find the camp’s events for handling daily medications or refills.•    Forms: Most camps need a vaccination and a health screening form. Enquire when you need to send the completed forms to camp.•    Updated contact information: If your contact information is changed since you registered your child for camp then call and update the camp director with your new contact information.
